How to Wear Polka Dots

Spring 2012: How to Wear Polka DotsNo longer a pattern associated solely with clowns, children, and extreme goofiness, the humble polka dot has taken on a surprisingly sophisticated stance in recent months. To wit, it’s been seen on some of the world’s most classic beauties – think Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, and Anne Hathaway – and catapulted headfirst into unimaginably glamorous ensembles.

From sleek sheath dresses to full-flowing skirts to peppy handbags, nothing has been left untouched by the almighty polka dot – and this spring, it’s one of the season’s most coveted looks. Pulling it off is surprisingly simple – it’s merely a matter of selective choosing. If you’re dot-shy, a smaller scale piece is essential. Conversely, a dot-happy gal would be over the moon with one of the many dotted maxi dresses or blouses on the racks.

Still not sure? Here are a few classy options:

Work the accessories. If you have a thing for noticeable, Minnie Mouse-style polka dots, adding a brazen accessory to your everyday look is the way to go. A statement bag, like Marc by Marc Jacobs’ Dotty Snake Hillier Faux Leather Hobo ($298), is playfully designed, but feels grown up thanks to its polished, slouchy-chic silhouette. Likewise, Mango’s Polka-Dot Foulard ($11.99) is a snappy, vintage-inspired option that livens up a work-day look with ease.

Spring 2012: How to Wear Polka DotsDress the part. The right dress silhouette makes all the difference. The high neckline, ruffle trim, and self-tie sash lend graceful maturity to Tory Burch’s Graham Dress ($395). Just in time for spring, it’s an ideal AM-to-PM piece easily dressed up with dazzling accessories.

Take it to the top. A polka-dotted blouse is perky, but looks decidedly adult when it’s elegantly designed with a pussy bow at the neck and a dramatic color palette. This Lauren by Ralph Lauren Ginnie Top ($159) channels the upcoming season’s 1940s trend perfectly, and is just as chic with jeans and flats as with a sleek pencil skirt and pumps.

Have some fun. Let’s face it – at the heart of it all, the polka dot is the very definition of a good time. Be fearless in something that will turn heads with its irresistible print, like the Alberta Ferretti Polka-Dot Silk-Chiffon Dress ($1595). Or play a game of flirty style with a full, playful skirt by Zac Posen. Partner your heavily-dotted pieces with simple components – solid tops, classic heels, minimal jewelry – so that the pattern really stands out.

Clearly, polka dots aren’t all juvenile – some are downright sexy, which can be quite empowering. And just about anything that exudes such retro charm is bound to be a forever favorite.
