“Most women are using the right products, just in the wrong order.” says Dr. Jessica Wu, Hollywood Dermatologist to the stars. “In which case, it’s kind of like wearing your undies outside your pants — it’s just not right!”
For the best results, here’s the order Dr. Wu recommends you should be applying on your skin-care products:
- Anything medicated or prescription-strength (like acne or rash cream) should go on first, after cleansing and toning. Medicated products need to go on next to your skin so they can do their job.
- If you use any other “active” products (like wrinkle serum or antioxidants), put them on next.
- Wait a few minutes, then apply sunscreen. Ideally, look for one that’s compatible with your skin type. For example, if your skin is dry, choose a moisturizing sunscreen cream like Shiseido Extra Smooth Sun Protection Cream SPF 38, so you might not need a separate moisturizer.
- If you’re oily or acne-prone, look for an oil-free gel like Clarins UV Plus Day Screen High Protection SPF 40 or Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Liquid Daily Sunblock SPF 55, which dry invisibly.
- If you still have any dry patches, apply moisturizer and/or eye cream only to these areas. Finish with a makeup primer, foundation and the rest of your makeup.
- At night, repeat the steps, except for sunscreen and makeup.
