WHERE TO FIND

A volumized bun is this seasons must have do’ for all of your holiday get togethers and has been a red carpet look worn by seen celebs like Lauren Conrad, Anne Hathaway, and Jennifer Lopez. Though this style may seem rather complicated (I mean, check out that volume! That seems impossible to get!) after learning a quick style trick, I assure you there’s nothing to it!

Ever hear of the “Sock Bun”? The term was foreign to me until recently when I met a girlfriend out for drinks last week. She had the most chic, polished bun sitting on top of her head…I simply could not stop staring at it. Now, this particular friend tends to be challenged when it comes to the hair styling department so I assumed she had either stopped into a salon for the style, or that it was a hair piece.

“Neither, It’s a sock bun!” she exclaimed as she began to peel back a layer of hair in the bun, only to expose an everyday, black dress sock. I could not believe in all my years in the beauty industry that I had never heard of this simple trick. It’s such a gorgeous look and takes only minutes to achieve!

GET THE LOOK

Begin by clipping a small hole in the toe of a sock (the size of the sock bun will be determined by the size of the sock) and roll from the toes up. Gather hair high up on head, around the crown, and secure with ponytail holder. Twist hair into a rope and slide sock up the length, pushing it against the hair tie. Let hair untwist. Lean over; spread hair back over the sock, covering it entirely. Use another ponytail holder to secure spread-out hair over the sock. Stand up straight; gently push hair down so that the remainder (if you have a remainder) spreads out under the newly created sock bun. Do whatever you wish with this; braid and twist around bun, simply twist around bun, let hang. At any point, a hair stick can be used to increase the stability of the bun or for decoration.  Finish with a setting spray that adds shine and allows some “movement” like Aveda’s Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.
